Join The Girl I Left Behind Me Block of the Month NOW - $25 Sign up Fee, 14 months at $19.95. BEGINS in September 2009. The Girl I Left Behind Me by Jerry Stube got its inspiration from a British folk song from the mid 1600's. The song is better know in today's society as the words of a song held dear by the US Military and often in old movies, especially John Wayne's Fort Apache and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. Women on the frontier were left behind by their Army husbands at lonely posts across the West. These strong women endured hardships and displayed amazing strengths as the zig-zagged across the western plains in the expansion of the United States. As the wife of a retired Army officer, I greatly admire these women. They are truly the ones who settled the West and made it home regardless of the trials they sustained. Our quilt, The Girl I Left Behind Me, will chronicle the lives of strong Army wives of the frontier, some of whom spent time living at Fort Leavenworth. |
